The California Opportunity

NativState’s California Forest Carbon Program is driven by the compliance requirements in the California Cap-and-Trade program administered by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Under this program, specific industries are required to lower their carbon footprint to reach net zero emissions targets by 2050. High-quality carbon offsets developed by NativState are a critical component for our corporate partners to offset their residual emissions to meet these requirements.

Under the NativState program, the offsets developed from your enrolled acres are already committed and sold to our corporate partners, virtually guaranteeing you carbon income and supporting your land legacy.

Benefits to Landowners

Your land is your legacy.

The NativState team is a group of dedicated scientists, engineers, foresters and land managers with a history of success in business who recognized a need for a market driven approach to deliver scale and economics to forest conservation. Our objective is to work with landowners to generate revenue by conserving their forests and create the scale necessary to participate in the California Cap-and-Trade regulatory carbon market.

Since 2021, NativState has returned over $20,000,000 to our landowner partners by successfully developing and selling high-quality carbon offsets to companies working to reduce their residual emissions.

Our forest carbon development expertise and successful track record is now available to California landowners looking for a new source of income and way to protect their land legacy. We are on the ground in Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity, Del Norte, Siskiyou, Modoc, and Shasta counties talking with local landowners and foresters about the opportunities and benefits of our program.

The NativState Process

After an initial discussion about your land and goals, NativState will perform a FREE Forest Carbon Assessment to better understand the carbon potential of your land. The California CARB program has very specific guidelines regarding the carbon stocking levels of a forest that can be enrolled in the program. Once your land is enrolled, NativState will perform all forest management and carbon offset development work necessary to produce, verify, and sell carbon offsets from your land.

And you receive professional forest management expertise and a new source of income!

Frequently Asked Questions

How are landowners paid in this program?

Upon enrollment with NativState, landowners are paid a $35.00 per net forested acre advance payment on future carbon offset royalties until offsets are verified.

Currently, NativState anticipates that it is approximately 36 months from enrollment to offset verification.

Once offsets are developed, verified, and sold, landowners receive a 30% royalty of gross carbon offset proceeds.

Landowners retain 100% of any timber harvest proceeds under the Select harvest program.

What is included in a Forest Carbon Assessment (FCA)?

The purpose of the NativState FCA is to give the landowner reasonable estimate of carbon income based on a projection of the amount of CO2 being sequestered in your forest’s trees.

Equating CO2 sequestered to projected carbon offsets will be based on your geographic eco-region and the characteristics of your forest (e.g., forest type, age class, and site index)

We also take into consideration commercial timber activity, best management practices in the region, and the legal right to harvest on your land.

Note: This assessment is provided to landowners as a representation of what is possible on their land regarding forest carbon offset generation. This estimate is not a contract, agreement, or guarantee by NativState Pacifica, LLC. Estimated credits and their value are based on our view of current pricing of nature-based carbon trading in the California (ARB) Compliance Market. The NativState FCA utilizes CARB (California Air Resources Board) Protocol 2015.

Can any trees be harvested while enrolled in this program?

Yes, under the NativState Carbon Easement, you are allowed an amount of timber harvest that must remain in compliance with your NativState Forest Management Plan (FMP). Please discuss specifics of your allowable harvest with your NativState representative.

How long is the enrollment period?

The NativState California Carbon Easement is a 100-year agreement. This is in line with CARB regulations and ensures the durability and permanence of the carbon project’s offsets, while ensuring your land is conserved for future generations.

What is the California Regulatory Cap-and-Trade market?

As companies from certain industries work to reduce their emissions by 2050, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has implemented and manages a Cap-and-Trade program that sets a limit to how much the Covered Entities can emit on a yearly basis. In tandem with reducing their actual emissions, Covered Entities can purchase ARB regulatory carbon offsets to fulfill their obligations that allow them to pay for emissions reductions to exist under the Cap.

Due to an increase in demand in the marketplace for high-quality regulatory carbon offsets, NativState can develop nature-based ARB carbon offsets on forest land and sell these offsets to our network of industry partners. We offer a turnkey solution that delivers to our landowner partners access to this market.
