The Mixed Broadleaf Forests of the Ozark Central Hills and Plateau is an aggregate approach to Improved Forest Management. The properties in this project are primarily owned by smaller landowners and families. NativState unites these owners with the goal of maintaining forest CO2e stocks through sustainable management.
The Ozark Central Hills and Plateau is a physiographic region primarily in Missouri and Arkansas that stretches into Kansas and Oklahoma. The Salem Plateau, Boston Mountains, and Springfield Plateau are the three primary geologic features of this region. Springs, sinkholes, and caves are common in the limestone that make the Salem Plateau and Boston Mountains. Many rivers in Arkansas find their headwaters in the Boston Mountains, two of these rivers include the White River and Little Red River which are popular spots for trout fishers.
Economic activity important to the region includes beef cattle ranching and dairy farming, oil and gas extraction, tourism, and logging of hardwood and softwood species on both National Forest and private lands. This project provides significant climate benefits and co-benefits through carbon sequestration from native forests.
